The Seven Wonders of the World is the name given to a group of reĀmarkable works of art and engineering that were popular among the ancients. It is supposed that the first list of the seven wonders of the world was prepared in the second century B.C. by Antipater of Sidon. A second and slightly different list occurs in a treatise entitled The Seven Wonders of the World. This treatise has been included in the works of Philo of Byzantium, who also lived about the second century B.C., but it is now believed it was written much later, probably in the sixth century A.D.

The generally accepted list of the seven wonders of the ancient world is as follows:

Since the list of the Seven Wonders of the World took form other lists of seven wonders have been suggested in imitation of the original; as, the seven wonders of the Middle Ages, the seven wonders of the modern world, the seven natural wonders of the world, etc., but these lists are continually changing and have no permanent value. The wonders of the ancient world were probably restricted to seven because of the sacred and symbolical significance of that number.
